Compare and Contrast the Culture of Pakistan and Canada

Introduction

Culture plays a major role in any society. Every country has its own cultural values, and norms, which could be considered its most costly asset and sometimes become the reason behind its identity. In simple words, culture is a system or the way we see and do things as a society and an important part of the way we experience life. (Culture and Society | Boundless Sociology, 2021). The aim of this essay is to compare and contrast the culture of Pakistan and Canada which can be done by focusing on three main parts of the discussion: The daily lifestyles, festivals, and historical places of both countries.

Discussion

Pakistani culture represents the sub-continent and Islamic culture. In Pakistan, people used to celebrate different festivals according to Islamic culture which is because of religious influence as 98% of the population of Pakistan is Muslim (Enoote,21).  Pakistani culture has festivals such as Eid, Shabraat, and Qurbani which are pure Islamic values. On the contrary, Canadian culture has been influenced by European culture and traditions, mostly by the British and French. In contrast to Pakistani culture, Canadian culture seems diverse that represents cowboy hoe-down to sophisticated cultural events (Toolstoy, 2021). For example, Canadian festivals such as Vancouver, the Calgary Stampede, Edmonton Folk Festival. So, the reason behind dissimilarities is the different cultural backgrounds these two countries have, as Pakistani culture is embedded with Islam values whereas the Canadian carries the liberal stuff influenced by the British and French.

The next discussion part which can help in comparing the culture of Pakistan and Canada is the historical places of both countries. Historical places have a soul and this soul always has a great impact on the culture of that country.  We can find a variety of historical places that signify the unique traditions and culture of Pakistan. Harappa, Mohenjo- Daro, and Taxila are the most renowned historical places of Pakistan which are historical because of their precious history. For example, Harappa has been recognized with the Indus Valley Civilization which is considered the most developed Civilization in the old Bronze Age. On the other side, historical places of Canada are some of the most impressive natural wonders in the world such as Fort Garry Hotel, Dawson, Yukon Territory, Fortifications of Québec (Chorney-Booth, 2021).  So, what makes both countries different, is the reason because of how historical they are. Pakistani historical places are more known for their old being whereas Canada has places that are natural wonders.

Conclusion

In this essay, I have compared and contrasted the countries of Pakistan and Canada by analyzing their differences and similarities in festivals, and historical places. Finally, we find out that Pakistani culture is traditional and conservative, on the contrary, Canadian culture is liberal. In Pakistan, people celebrate festivals according to Islamic culture whereas Canadian culture is diverse (Chorney-Booth, 2021). the cultures of Canada and Pakistan are different from each other and these differences make both countries’ cultures great and unique. This topic has appealed to me that there should be a compression between these two countries on lifestyles of the people.

CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT ANALYSIS OF JAPAN: USING HALL’S FRAMEWORK AND TROMPENAARS’ FRAMEWORK.

Cultural Environment Analysis of Japan

It is well said, having a great place to work makes the difference between running a good company and a great company.  Every country has its own set of beliefs, attitudes, customs, and ways of life that directly relates to what things they buy and how they spend their money.  So, Assessment of the cultural environment has become an essential step in pre-marketing research.

Hall’s framework

Edward Twitchell Hall (1914 – 2009) published a book (Proxemic Research 1974) In contrast to other famous cultural environment researchers like Hofstede and Trompenaars, and explain his theory successfully. He defies the four cultural dimensions which are 1) context, 2) time, 3) Speed of Information, And 4) space also known as Proxemics. Context, Halls most of the cultural dimensions relate to the communication style. According to HALL, High context culture gives more priority to personal long-term relationships whereas low-context culture causes short-term relationships (Hall, 1974).  Japan is ranked as a high-context culture. They give value to harmony, traditions, and slowly adapt to changes and develop strong bonds among groups (Frost 2013). They are also non-committal, and their conversation style is of high context. Japanese communication is digressive, modest as well as polite with the use of fewer words (Nishimura et al. 2008).

Trompenaars’ framework.

Fons Trompenaars (born 1952) is a management trainer in the area of intercultural communication. He has issued many books about culture and business.  In his book “Riding the Waves of Culture 1932”, he identified seven dimensions of culture which are Universalism versus Particularism, Individualism versus Communitarianism, Neutral versus Affective, Achievement versus Ascription, Specific versus Diffuse, Internal versus External control, and Sequential versus Synchronic.  Universalism vs particulars: in Trompenaars’ framework factor universalism’ vs ‘particularism represents the degree of value of relationships.  Japanese follow particularism in their response as well as codify the relation between people within the circumstances (Mindtools 1996-2016A). Neutral Vs Emotional: According to Trompenaars Neutral vs, Emotional dimension refers to the degree to which members of society freely display their feelings and thoughts in a deal. Japanese fall under the category of neutral culture as they are free to express their feelings spontaneously and positive use of body language and attitude is welcomed and accepted. (Mindtools 1996-2016A). Internal Direction Vs Outer direction concerns an individual’s response toward nature (Seven Dimensions 2005-2016).  Japanese have an outer-directed culture. They live in harmony with their environment preferring the comfortable of altars and changes in the environment (Bihjelpen, 2015). Sequential time vs Synchronous time refers to the degree to which a member gives importance to time for a particular work (Seven Dimensions 2005-2016).  Japanese synchronize the time. They have multiple projects running at a time considering the flexibility of time (Mindtools 1996-2016 A).

Challenges for American Investors Posed by Cultural Environment

In recent years, the importance of the paradigm of culture in business cannot be declined. The diverse environmental cultures have influenced investment. On the other side, there are also a few concerns causing challenges for American investors such as failure to communicate adequately because of the language barrier.  In the same regard, understanding Etiquette in the workplace, for example, direct eye contact may differently mean and impact. it may be a problem in understating how to be addressed by the title, first name basis, or surname.

Opportunities for American Investors Posed by Cultural Environment

Along with challenges, Diversity in cultures also creates more betters experiences in business such as the elements of curiosity; Curiosity creates investment as a balance exists between the role of curiosity as a motivational force in Diverse cultures. On the other side, the Japanese follow particularism in their response as well as codify the relation between people within the circumstances. Also, support for transnational collaboration projects for developing the living standards of people is another opportunity for investors.

Recommendation

Failure to communicate adequately because of the language barrier found a big challenge for the American investor. This challenge can be overcome by using the context culture dimension from Hall’s framework.  Japanese conversation style is of high context. Japanese communication is humble and polite with the use of fewer words (Nishimura et al. 2008). So, by keeping in mind these facts investors can prevail over the issue.

The challenges of understanding Etiquette in the workplace can be overcome by using the Fons Trompenaars’ Internal Direction Vs Outer direction culture dimension. It is found that the Japanese have an outer-directed culture. They live in harmony with their environment preferring the comfortable of alters and changes in the environment (Bihjelpen, 2015). So, by working on Trompenaars’ Internal Direction Vs Outer direction culture dimension, investors can get a better of the challenges of understanding Etiquette in the workplace.

EXPLANATION OF A CONCEPT: GENRE

Introduction

Although it is most commonly known for its use in film and literature, the genre is a key concept in many areas of education, particularly in literacy education. The idea of ‘genre’ has complicated origins, owing to its use in other fields. This makes definitions of genre challenging. One of the most common definitions comes from the Australian Sydney School which finds that “genre is a staged, goal-oriented, purposeful activity in which speakers engage as members of our culture” (Martin & Rose, 2007, p. 34). As the first part of the definition suggests, the Sydney School sees genre first and foremost as something people do to get things done, and as such, there is a strong emphasis on the form of genres. Meanwhile, the Rhetorical Genre Studies school originating in America was formed around the following definition of genre as  “typified rhetorical actions based in recurrent” (Miller, 1984, p. 236). In this school, the genre is more about the situation to which one responds, than the response itself, even if that is a matter of relative emphasis, not absolute difference.

Analysis

One of the key ways in which genre is classified is between cognitive and social genres. Social genres are types of text classified according to their social purpose. For example, a novel, a newspaper editorial, and a cookbook are all social genres because we think of them according to their use and their identity as complete texts. Cognitive genres, on the other hand, are defined according to their rhetorical purpose. For instance, one purpose might be to recount a narrative, another to explain a process, or to persuade someone to do something. Whereas social genres are more commonly perceived as single texts, cognitive genres are very often only parts of texts, and any one social genre might contain many cognitive genres.

Application

The most common area of application for these ideas about the genre is in schools. Whereas school children were once taught about social genres alone, they are now routinely taught about cognitive genres. Literacy teachers of all levels teach students to recognize how texts achieve their purposes. Primary teachers teach students to read by asking them questions about the text, such as “is the purpose of this text to inform, entertain, or persuade?”. Literacy teachers help students to master these skills, building from simple and familiar, such as instructions, to complex and unfamiliar, such as forms of persuasion. The instructors guide students in understanding larger social forms of reading and writing. High school teachers use scientific reports, for example, to build on students’ knowledge of hypothesizing, process explanations, narrative recounts, and summarizing.

Local example

One area in the UAE where the concept of genre has become important in the past 10 years is in higher education. As universities began to close Academic Bridge Programs in the UAE, academic literacy professors have increasingly turned to raise genre awareness to teach local high school leavers the kinds of language skills that will enable students to be successful in their academic careers. This has meant teaching students to recognize different kinds of genres, and to ask the kinds of questions that will enable them to successfully deal with the new genres they meet in their studies at university. At Zayed University, this course is called Academic Language and Literacies and it has helped over 1000 students since its inception in 2019 (Institutional Data, 2021).

ESSAY ON: WATER AS COMMODITY

Introduction

It is said thousands can live without love, not even a single without water. Life without water cannot even be imagen. Life on earth directly depends on water. So, human existence is not possible without water. As well, the business of water is also running from the very first day.  Humans stored and distributed water for centuries until today.  From the stone age to agriculture, river water was used for drinking purposes. Most of the old civilizations are found near a river or lake. In short, the whole civilization is built on the use of water (Ormerod, 1995). Others, who were not living close to rivers or lakes, were used to drinking groundwater which was pumped up through wells. But as the growth in the human population increased, the water supply was no longer sufficient. Nowadays, there is a huge business of water supply. Approximately, there are 30,703 Water Supply & Irrigation Systems in the UAE. An increase of 1.9% has been noticed from 2020 to 2021. So, the people of the UAE should be careful in buying water because buying poor quality water can pose a health risk not only for humans but also for ecosystems. Consumers should buy mineral water due to its health benefits as well as economic benefits.

Discussion

Mineral water’s evolution is closely linked to its past use in thermal baths where its health benefits were recognized.  It was a time of the Ancient Romans when they created effective distribution systems and collected water from the ground using a water wheel.  Along with this, Romans became aware of the therapeutic properties of mineral water. the precursors of the bottles we use today were carried by Roman as the water was stored in amphorae. Bottled water became fashionable in the 16th century through the Arabic influence in Spain (Ormerod, 1995). Later, it is justified that polluted water causes several types of diseases such as typhoid and cholera, which led to the development of the trade in bottled mineral water. Also, mineral water sales were boosted by advertising that made huge growth in income in the 20th century. In 2008, Nestlé was declared the world’s leading bottled water producer. Later, in 2015 the firm owned 52 different water brands such as Perrier, Contrex, and Vittel. Nowadays, bottled mineral water is considered synonymous with purity.

Drinking mineral waters provide health benefits. Mineral waters contain carbonation and mineral content such as Calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium that provide multiple health benefits, including Lowering Blood Pressure, Contributing to Heart Health, Relieving Symptoms of Constipation, and a source of magnesium (Jaffee, 2012). In a recent study, women drank 1 liter of mineral water per day for two months.  The results showed that mineral water intake lowered the levels of bad (LDL) cholesterol and raised the levels of good (HDL) cholesterol which proves that minerals waters contribute to Heart Health. According to Lennen, (2003, para. 4) Mineral water contains calcium, which helps promote bone strength in case bone tissue breaks down, the body deposits new bone in its place, however, during adolescence, new bone is deposited faster than old bone breaks down. The body absorbs calcium from milk, calcium supplements, and mineral water. mineral water with high amounts of calcium can improve the body’s calcium supply” Researchers discovered that the positive impact of mineral water on high blood pressure as patient drinks four weeks of mineral water, and significant decrease noted inpatient people’s blood pressure (Jaffee, 2012). People in the United States have access to clean drinking water and many people choose bottled mineral water for its perceived purity and potential health benefits. There is also a need for the people of the UAE to make careful decisions while buying and drinking water because it not only affects their health as well as the economic structure of the country.

Mineral water is considered one of the most popular commodities in the UAE. Dubai has 29 mineral water production companies, which support the economic growth of the country by offering thousands of jobs (Wilk,2006). There are several brands in the country including Nestle Waters Factory, Dubai Refreshment Company, Union Beverages Factory Oasis Pure Wate, Mai Dubai Company for Bottled Drinking Water, etc.  “Local companies play an active role in the mineral water market, especially with the high demand of the industry, in addition to the ease of marketing its products. Competition between local companies is greater than those with foreign companies, and customers tend to deal with local companies more, especially for mineral water, with some companies in the sector operating since the 1960s. In the same regard, Trading in the drinking water sector is permitted only if the companies operate in conformity with the mandatory UAE system for regulating drinking water to ensure the best standards and practices that protect public health and support the national economy ”. (Alshaer,2018, p. 13) These all companies adhere to the highest standards of pure quality of water which leads to a positive impact on the health of the consumer (Wilk,2006). Standard of check and balance expect that companies make sure water extraction, through sanitary testing and packaging processes. With this process, they become able to provide 100% pure mineral water integrated with mineral components that nourish individual human health as well as public human health.

Conclusion

In conclusion:  water is a very important commodity as well as essential for life.  Water is life and life on earth directly depends on water that is why humans stored and distributed water for centuries until today. However, consumers should buy mineral water as it ensures health benefits as well as economic growth because of mineral water industries.  Mineral waters discovery started in thermal baths and, mineral water is considered the symbol of purity. Mineral water is considered one of the most popular commodities in the UAE, and Interestingly Dubai has 29 mineral water production companies that support the economic growth of the country by offering thousands of jobs.  So, people in the UAE should be more careful with how they should drink water.

Compare and Contrast Essay: Parenting Style of UK VS Lebanon

Introduction

Parenting seems the easiest thing to have an opinion about, but it becomes the hardest thing in the world to do. Developmental psychologists have found a very deep impact of parenting styles on children’s development. However, it is also true there is a rare connection between specific actions of parents and later behavior of children. A study was conducted by Diana Baumrind in the 1960s, on more than 100 preschool-age children where she became able to find four parenting styles which are authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting styles. UK and Lebanon both countries fall into the same parenting styles. Because of globalization a lot of things have been marginalized between Lebanon and the UK, however, both countries still have a lot of things in parenting styles that can be compared and contrasted.  The parenting styles of the UK and Lebanon can be compared and contrasted by focusing on three main parts of the discussion:  Culture values of local Lebanon people and the UK, the role of religion, and both as a modern society.

Discussion

The UK and Lebanon both carry different cultural values which cause different parenting styles. Lebanon is a country where most of the people are conservative and exhibits a great deal of respect for modesty and chastity. Most Lebanese believe in organized religion and parliamentary government (Religion held in Lebanon, 2021).  On the other hand, UK cultural values are different. The people of the UK are open-minded and free thinkers. The culture of the UK promotes liberalism which causes parenting styles accordingly (Chan Anita Koo, T., 2021). Because of the bigoted culture of Lebanese, the parenting style is authoritative. Lebanon children are suppressed under the heavy weight of morality from their childhood in the contrast, the UK parents are more modern and generous so they carry the permissive styles.

Religious thoughts play critical roles in defining the parenting styles of any country. Lebanon is a strongly religious country where almost all the population has a religious affiliation. A study conducted by Statistics Lebanon in 2020 shows Lebanon’s population is estimated to be 50% Muslim, 45% Christian, 5% Melkite, and 5.2% Druze (“Religion in Lebanon – Wikipedia”, 2021). In contrast, the UK is a hub of atheism and no religious people. The proportion of people in the UK who say they are not God “very or extremely non-religious” has more than doubled, from 14% to 33% in the past two decades (Chan Anita Koo, T., 2021). Because of this contrast in religion, both countries have different parenting styles. In Lebanon, people are religious, so they value the concept of morality, and because of moral influence, parents consider their rights confidently which leads to authoritarian parenting styles. On the other side, parents in the UK are broad-minded so they let their child do their free will which leads to uninvolved parenting styles.

A big proportion of Lebanese society also is very modern and similar to certain cultures in the UK.  That proportion of Lebanon is linked culturally to Europe through France.  The uniquely diverse religious composition makes a rare environment that is at once European and Arab (Chan Anita Koo, 2021) So, because of this modern society, we found similarities between these two countries’ parenting styles, which are closer to authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting styles.

Conclusion

To summarize, we have compared and contrasted the parenting styles of the UK and Lebanon by focusing on the cultural values of local Lebanon people and the UK, religion, and both modern societies.  Because the UK and Lebanon, both carry different cultural values, these countries have different parenting styles. Besides, the role of religion is also critical in defining the parenting styles of both countries, meanwhile, the big proportion of Lebanese society also is very modern and similar to certain cultures in the UK which leads to similar parenting styles.

Essay on concept of Computer networking

Introduction

The process of interacting with others to exchange information is an everyday task of humans as well as on a computer machine. Computer networking is a connection between two computers: according to the editors of the encyclopedia Britannica, when two or more computers are connected to exchange data electronically called computer networking (“computer network | Definition & Types”, 2021).

Discussion

They explained a network as a system that makes a cohesive architecture that allows a variety of equipment types to transfer information. In the same way, Cambridge Dictionary Online describes computer networking as a practice of transporting and exchanging data between nodes over a shared medium in a particular arranged system. Further, they see networking as a system that facilitates everything from telephone calls to text messaging to streaming video.

There are many types of computer networking categories based on how the network is built and the network functions.  The most important types are Personal Area Network (PAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), Local Area Network (LAN),   and Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).  The two most basic computer networking types that have vast use everywhere are local-area networks (LANs) and wide-area networks (WANs).

When we have to connect computers in a limited physical area, such as a college campus, business office, or laboratory, we may build a Local area network (LAN). LAN is used for a limited area, on the other side, A wide area network (WAN), is a large network of exchanging of information that is not supposed to tie to a single location. This is used for sharing information worldwide. For example, The Internet and bank cash dispenser are good examples of the WAN network. Mostly the LANs are connected to WANs, for example, a university network can be connected to the Internet, which makes it LAN to WAN (WANG, 2008).

Conclusion

In my school computer lab, we had local area networks, or LANs, as I have explained above LAN is used to connect computers typically inside one building. The networking resources were printers, IP phones, servers, routers, and computers. The Connections between the nodes were physical, with cables. That was the most common type of LAN known as Ethernet. As this is a family of frame-based computer networking technologies so each device has a unique IP address. The most important devices which were used to build that local area network was the router, Ethernet cable, crossover Ethernet cable, and network interface.

ESSAY ON : HOW THE DUALITY OF HUMAN NATURE MANIFEST IN THE SHORT STORY “THE LOTTERY”

Introduction

Most of Shirley Jackson’s works focused on human behavior and psychological analysis. Duality, madness, and evil are recurring themes in many of her works. Her best-known short story “The Lottery ” depicts the theme of the duality of human nature. People from a typical village stone an innocent person every year in town for the sake of an annual ritual. In this short story,  duality of human nature manifests in “The Lottery” when  Jackson asks whether all humans are capable of cruelty and explores how the natural inclinations of humans can be justified by emphasizing the structure and tradition of society. Philosophers are constantly questioning the basic structure of human nature through the ages: does human nature have duality? Are humans fundamentally good or evil?

In the short story “The Lottery” Jackson has urged the same questions through the depiction of an ordinary town people who are capable of unusual violence but still they are living a satisfying life. This literary analysis provides details on how the duality of human nature manifests in the short story “The Lottery” which is intentionally designed to seem timeless and universal.

Discussion

The short story starts with an annual ritual in a typical village.  When a reader starts reading it seems like someone is going to win money as the title of the story is the lottery. However, it takes a dark turn when the event is revealed that it is not about money but this was a traditional annual ritual where everyone in town got together to stone a victim whose name was picked from the lottery. “Well, now. ” Mr Summers said soberly, “guess we better get started, get this over with, so we can go back to work. Anybody ain’t here?” The ending of the story shocked many readers when the story was first published in New York, so the duality of human nature manifests in “The Lottery”

The event of the lottery shows the duality of human nature and how they are capable of having two sides of the same coin. Typical villagers follow horrible, gory, and weird, traditions based on superstition only because their ancestors used to do this ritual. “Listening to the young folks, Next thing you know, they’ll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody works anymore. There’s always been a lottery because of this the corn will be heavy soon, Old Man Warner said”. So, Jackson discloses that the people in the village have no humanity as everyone is still permitting the lottery, without thinking about killing. They are training their children as “Someone gave little Davy Hutchinson a few pebbles” to stone his mother Hutchinson.

The brutal ending of the story suggests that humans have a dual nature. They are ready to do great cruelty as long as their decision will not harm them directly. Even Tessie Hutchison was not against the annual ritual until she was signed out. “it isn’t fair, it isn’t right,” but now this objection has no voice as it was raised too late.

Conclusion

In conclusion: Jackson criticizes the nature of humans that we humans follow the same weird and horrible traditions if only a majority is willing to do so, without caring either action may have extreme consequences. Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now. “It isn’t fair,” she said. But everyone has decided to stone, so a stone hit her on the side of the head. Old Man Warner was saying, “Come on, come on, everyone.” The story provokes the fundamental abnormality and duality of people in their nature. With this example of the lottery, Jackson draws the reader’s attention to the universality of the ideas. So, Jackson suggests the existence of such types of violence anywhere, must be due to some innate aspect of human nature.

“Copyright also known as author’s right is an exclusive right that authors have over their artistic and literary work”.   So, it is a kind of protection that ranges from all types of literature to computer programs, technical drawings, advertisements, maps, etc. (Kim, 2020)

Discussion

Copyright is a legal term that describes the law that gives protection to creators’ work either published or unpublished. These collections of rights automatically vest to the person who makes an original work of authorship such as a book, movie, song, etc. plagiarism is considered a serious academic offense so no one else can use or present the work as its own without proper citing, although the authors have the right to reproduce the work and display the work publicly (Kim, 2020). Copyright law is justified by the World Intellectual Property Organization, first in the pact of “Protection of Industrial Property” during the Paris Convention of 1883 and during the Berne Convention of 1886, when they have the treaty “Protection of Literary and Artistic Works.” At the time, intellectual properties were acknowledged with the emerging societies attribute.

Copyright law was first coined in the United Kingdom with the concept of the common law of authorship, represented as the statute of Anne 1709.  After passing the copyright act 1911, this common law adopted statutory law (MINAMI, 2010).  The current act is the designs, the copyright, and patents act 1988. The main purpose of the copyright laws is to protect and provide security to the authors, publishers, performers, broadcasters, artists and many others whose all career depends on their intellectual property and recognition of rights”

Copyright law in the UAE has vast applications. Intellectual property laws have been issued by President Zayad which was achieved through putting in place a law that provides years of protection with licensing, and punishment in case of any law offense (UAE Interact 2002). According to intellectual property laws issued by President Zayed, the owner is the right party to sue in court upon infringement, protection of the work includes books, articles, songs, and computer software.  Further, UAE copyright laws assure that any person found showing someone else works as his or her property without the owner’s authorization, will face severe penalties waiting (UAE Interact, 2002). This could lead to imprisonment if the offense is repeated and justified. In short, copyright law protects the motivation of creativity.

Conclusion

There are various benefits of understanding copyright law in UAE as a communication and media science student. This is based on the fact that a media science student deals with works of art in many instances. The student should be acquainted with the essential laws to ensure that he or she avoids possible infringement.
