ESSAY ON: WATER AS COMMODITY

Introduction

It is said thousands can live without love, not even a single without water. Life without water cannot even be imagen. Life on earth directly depends on water. So, human existence is not possible without water. As well, the business of water is also running from the very first day.  Humans stored and distributed water for centuries until today.  From the stone age to agriculture, river water was used for drinking purposes. Most of the old civilizations are found near a river or lake. In short, the whole civilization is built on the use of water (Ormerod, 1995). Others, who were not living close to rivers or lakes, were used to drinking groundwater which was pumped up through wells. But as the growth in the human population increased, the water supply was no longer sufficient. Nowadays, there is a huge business of water supply. Approximately, there are 30,703 Water Supply & Irrigation Systems in the UAE. An increase of 1.9% has been noticed from 2020 to 2021. So, the people of the UAE should be careful in buying water because buying poor quality water can pose a health risk not only for humans but also for ecosystems. Consumers should buy mineral water due to its health benefits as well as economic benefits.

Discussion

Mineral water’s evolution is closely linked to its past use in thermal baths where its health benefits were recognized.  It was a time of the Ancient Romans when they created effective distribution systems and collected water from the ground using a water wheel.  Along with this, Romans became aware of the therapeutic properties of mineral water. the precursors of the bottles we use today were carried by Roman as the water was stored in amphorae. Bottled water became fashionable in the 16th century through the Arabic influence in Spain (Ormerod, 1995). Later, it is justified that polluted water causes several types of diseases such as typhoid and cholera, which led to the development of the trade in bottled mineral water. Also, mineral water sales were boosted by advertising that made huge growth in income in the 20th century. In 2008, Nestlé was declared the world’s leading bottled water producer. Later, in 2015 the firm owned 52 different water brands such as Perrier, Contrex, and Vittel. Nowadays, bottled mineral water is considered synonymous with purity.

Drinking mineral waters provide health benefits. Mineral waters contain carbonation and mineral content such as Calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium that provide multiple health benefits, including Lowering Blood Pressure, Contributing to Heart Health, Relieving Symptoms of Constipation, and a source of magnesium (Jaffee, 2012). In a recent study, women drank 1 liter of mineral water per day for two months.  The results showed that mineral water intake lowered the levels of bad (LDL) cholesterol and raised the levels of good (HDL) cholesterol which proves that minerals waters contribute to Heart Health. According to Lennen, (2003, para. 4) Mineral water contains calcium, which helps promote bone strength in case bone tissue breaks down, the body deposits new bone in its place, however, during adolescence, new bone is deposited faster than old bone breaks down. The body absorbs calcium from milk, calcium supplements, and mineral water. mineral water with high amounts of calcium can improve the body’s calcium supply” Researchers discovered that the positive impact of mineral water on high blood pressure as patient drinks four weeks of mineral water, and significant decrease noted inpatient people’s blood pressure (Jaffee, 2012). People in the United States have access to clean drinking water and many people choose bottled mineral water for its perceived purity and potential health benefits. There is also a need for the people of the UAE to make careful decisions while buying and drinking water because it not only affects their health as well as the economic structure of the country.

Mineral water is considered one of the most popular commodities in the UAE. Dubai has 29 mineral water production companies, which support the economic growth of the country by offering thousands of jobs (Wilk,2006). There are several brands in the country including Nestle Waters Factory, Dubai Refreshment Company, Union Beverages Factory Oasis Pure Wate, Mai Dubai Company for Bottled Drinking Water, etc.  “Local companies play an active role in the mineral water market, especially with the high demand of the industry, in addition to the ease of marketing its products. Competition between local companies is greater than those with foreign companies, and customers tend to deal with local companies more, especially for mineral water, with some companies in the sector operating since the 1960s. In the same regard, Trading in the drinking water sector is permitted only if the companies operate in conformity with the mandatory UAE system for regulating drinking water to ensure the best standards and practices that protect public health and support the national economy ”. (Alshaer,2018, p. 13) These all companies adhere to the highest standards of pure quality of water which leads to a positive impact on the health of the consumer (Wilk,2006). Standard of check and balance expect that companies make sure water extraction, through sanitary testing and packaging processes. With this process, they become able to provide 100% pure mineral water integrated with mineral components that nourish individual human health as well as public human health.

Conclusion

In conclusion:  water is a very important commodity as well as essential for life.  Water is life and life on earth directly depends on water that is why humans stored and distributed water for centuries until today. However, consumers should buy mineral water as it ensures health benefits as well as economic growth because of mineral water industries.  Mineral waters discovery started in thermal baths and, mineral water is considered the symbol of purity. Mineral water is considered one of the most popular commodities in the UAE, and Interestingly Dubai has 29 mineral water production companies that support the economic growth of the country by offering thousands of jobs.  So, people in the UAE should be more careful with how they should drink water.
